The Steel Joist Institute brings a special guest speaker, Dr. Thomas M. Murray, for the webinar “Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems". This webinar covers information contained within the soon to be updated SJI Technical Digest No 5 Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems. The procedures presented are the result of research conducted over the last 20 years and verified using an extensive database of tested steel joist supported concrete floors.

This webinar will focus on:

  • Offer suggested procedures and criteria for determining the adequacy of steel joist concrete floors subjected to human movement such as walking and rhythmic activities.
  • Review a detailed example showing how one can determine in the design phase the predicted vibrational properties of a steel joist supported concrete floor system.
  • Discuss software available to facilitate vibration calculations of steel joist supported concrete floor systems.
  • Give remedial methods for improving lively floors utilizing structural and non-structural solutions.

Dr. Thomas M. Murray
Dr. Thomas M. Murray is Emeritus Professor of Structural Steel Design at Virginia Tech and is co-author with Dr. Brad Davis, University of Kentucky, of the Steel Joist Institute’s Technical Digest No 5 Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems. He has published many papers on the subject of floor vibrations and has presented seminars on the subject in numerous countries. Dr. Murray is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Iron and Steel Institute specification committees, as well as, the AISC Committee on Manuals and Textbooks. He is a graduate of Iowa State University, Lehigh University and the University of Kansas, where he received his PhD.

Who Should Attend This Webinar?

Structural engineers and engineering managers or supervisors who are responsible for the design or qualification of building structures and structural components subjected to gravity and lateral loading as well as those responsible for auditing, reviewing or approving such designs will benefit from this course. Those with very little design experience as well as those with many years of experience will find the course beneficial.

Continuing Education Units
Each participant will earn 0.15 CEUs, 1.5 PDHs or 1.5 LUs and receive a certificate of completion from SJI.
